The NDA reports to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) it was previously named the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

In 2015 the 2008 Planning Act was changed so that nuclear waste storage was added to the list of nationally significant infrastructure projects in England.

"...the sites are now officially considered 'nationally significant infrastructure projects' and so will be chosen by the secretary of state for energy. He or she would get advice from the planning inspectorate, but would not be bound by the recommendation. Local councils and communities can object to details of the development but cannot stop it altogether."

The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) mentioned in the article is now the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The Minister of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero since September 2022 is Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness.
