In the UK we do have an exisiting vision of what a GDF surface facility could look like in the form of the Woodsmith potash mine in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This site is approximately 0.5 km square (half the size of the proposed surface facility for a UK GDF), but similarly once in operation it will be lit up 24x7:
To date our only impression of what the surface facility for the GDF will look like has come from the artist'renderings from NWS. This would be 247 acres (1 km square and twice that of Woodsmith) once operational, but larger during development:
This is very similar to what the French are developing for their GDF at Meuse/Haute Marne:
However the French have split the shaft access for workers from the waste transfer ramps:
