My letter to the editor of the Holderness Gazette holderness-gazette.co.uk (in case it isn't printed):
In today's (19 December) Gazette, when reflecting on the failed proposal to construct a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) in South-East Holderness to handle nuclear waste for the next 100 years, no mention was made of the 100 plus people that actively worked, and the 1,200 that supported through the Facebook group, to oppose it.
The piece actually credits Graham Stuart MP whose then Department initially approved the bid, before he saw the mood, changed sides and eventually resigned as a Minister, because he knew he was on ‘the wrong side of history’ and could lose his seat.
The reality is that in 21 days the people of South-East Holderness took down a £38 billion Government Department, their local council, a local councillor and their sitting MP, helping reduce his majority from 20,448 to 124. I am so proud to be part of that community.
Just to note the that the proposal to site the GDF in Theddlethorpe, Lincolnshire, is still very active. Theddlethorpe is straight line 25 miles from Patrington, about the same distance as Castle Hill Hospital.
